They were brats, which implies they weren't much older than Eren at the time. It's odd that even as youngsters (brats), they could turn into full-sized "adult" Titans and didn't alter at all. So, since age isn't a factor in the transformation of people into Titans, some of these Titans may be very small children (or perhaps very old?). I believe that transforming people into Titans is only really effective when done at an early age. But, in any case, back to your questions. I believe you are correct. They were presumably young and foolish when they were persuaded to fight for a cause in which they no longer believe. It took a lot for them to turn against their purpose and decide to inform Eren since it was something they were/were extremely attached to.

Reiner, as one of the top ten graduates of the 104th Training Corps, is an expert in the use of vertical maneuvering equipment and weaponry. He is also one of the recruits' greatest hand-to-hand fighters, having taught other excellent fighters like as Eren. Reiner is known for having a powerful physique and a strong will, both in human and Titan form. Reiner's ability to parachute off of an airship into the battlefield suggests that he has undergone more air force-related training after coming home and waging a war for Marley for four years.
