Scarface, a 1983 film starring Al Pacino as Tony Montana, a violent Cuban immigrant who kills his way to the top of Miami's cocaine-crazed underworld. (The film was partially based on the 1932 film Scarface: The Shame of a Nation, starring Paul Muni as bloodthirsty mobster Tony Camonte.) That picture, in turn, was partially based on the life of real-life gangster Al Capone, dubbed "Scarface." When it was initially released in 1983, the picture, directed by Brian DePalma and scripted by Oliver Stone, was a minor success. It did, however, achieve cult status in the 1990s and early 2000s due to its appeal among hip-hop performers and other young moviegoers. This second generation of fans seemed to be intrigued by the film's rags-to-riches storyline, as well as Al Pacino's over-the-top performance and the ludicrous amounts of violence and rough language. In 2003, the picture was re-released to great acclaim.

Ted Beniades, well remembered for his part in the film Scarface as an undercover detective who nabbed Al Pacino, has died at the age of 91.
He was the eldest son of Greek immigrants Mary and Cleanthis Beniades, and was born Theodore Cleanthis Beniades in the Bronx, New York. Beniades died quietly at his home in Brookville, Pennsylvania, according to his family.
Pacino went to Greenwich Village at the age of 19 after growing up in East Harlem and the Bronx, where he studied acting at the Herbert Berghof Studio and featured in various Off-Broadway and out-of-town plays, including Hello, Out There (1963) and Why Is a Crooked Letter? (1966). He continued his acting training with Lee Strasberg and appeared in the 1969 picture Me, Natalie. He made his Broadway debut the following year and received a Tony Award for his performance in the play Does the Tiger Wear a Necktie? Pacino's first main part in a film was in The Panic in Needle Park (1971), a bleak story about heroin addiction that became a cult classic. The Godfather, Serpico, and Scarface have all achieved celebrity.
