Michael Rockefeller, the son of New York governor Nelson Rockefeller and one of the heirs to the Standard Oil dynasty, had a fascination for traveling to foreign locations and experiencing the unknown and undisturbed. In 1961, Rockefeller's yearning for adventure led him to the furthest regions of Papua New Guinea. The Asmat people of Dutch New Guinea, as the large island off the coast of Australia was known at the time, had little interaction with the outside world. When Rockefeller arrived, he discovered the unknown terrain he was seeking for, but he was terribly ignorant of what he was in for.
