Gru grabs the shrink ray when it is being tested at an East Asian facility and flees aboard his spacecraft. Vector, on the other hand, snatches Gru's shrink ray in mid-flight. Gru attempts, but fails, to shoot Vector down with weapons and later missiles. Vector then uses the shrink ray to destroy Gru's spacecraft in retaliation for the latter freezing his skull. The spacecraft shrinks as a result, forcing Gru and the Minions to ride the shrunken ship home. Gru tries to reclaim the shrink ray from Vector's lair, but is foiled by its protective systems and Vector's pet shark. Gru notices three females, Margo, Edith, and Agnes, attempting to sell Vector cookies and let them to in. Gru intends to use the girls to take the shrink ray back and calls Dr. Nefario, instructing him to construct a swarm of Cookie Robots for the robbery. Gru disguises himself as a dentist and travels to Miss Hattie's Home for Girls, the orphanage where Margo, Edith, and Agnes come from, to adopt them.
